It’s no surprise that uncertainty is one of the biggest challenges facing teams and leaders right now. In the past few weeks alone, I’ve had a wave of requests for workshops and support focused on navigating uncertainty. Whether it’s due to restructures, changing priorities, or the relentless pace of the world around us, people are looking for ways to stay steady, even when the ground feels like it’s shifting beneath them.

So I thought I’d pull together a few of the tools and tips I’ve been sharing in workshops lately.

These are grounded in science, lived experience, and practical action. They won’t make uncertainty disappear (uncertainty is going nowhere!) but they can help you lead yourself and others with a bit more confidence, clarity and care.

Here are five of my go-to tools for navigating uncertain times...

Understand what’s happening in your brain (and your body)

When we face uncertainty, our brains don’t like it, and our nervous systems react accordingly. Ambiguity and lack of control activate our threat response, leading to stress, heightened emotion, and often rash decision-making.

Just knowing this can help you respond more compassionately, to yourself and others. When you notice yourself spiralling into overthinking or feeling stuck, ask 'What might my brain be trying to protect me from right now'?

Focus on what is in your control

We waste a lot of energy trying to control things we simply can’t. Using the Circle of Influence model can help you separate what’s within your control (like your attitude, actions, and boundaries) from what isn’t (like the economy, other people’s reactions, or big strategic decisions). Shifting your focus to where you can make an impact is both empowering and calming.

Build trust and psychological safety

Uncertainty can fray relationships and erode trust, unless we’re intentional about maintaining it. Brené Brown’s BRAVING model is a brilliant framework for understanding what trust really looks like in action: boundaries, reliability, accountability and more.

Pair that with psychological safety, creating a culture where people feel safe to speak up, ask for help and admit mistakes, and you’re giving your team a powerful foundation to weather any storm.

Protect your energy, not just your time

It’s tempting to power through when things feel chaotic, but resilience isn’t about pushing harder (despite what companies often want you to think!!) it’s about recovering smarter.

Simple tools like a mini energy audit can help you notice what’s fuelling or draining you.

Rest, boundaries and nervous system regulation (like breathwork) aren’t fluffy nice to haves, they’re essential for staying grounded and sustainable.

Practise emotional agility

Uncertainty often brings up fear, frustration or self-doubt. Rather than ignoring those feelings or trying to “positive think” your way out of them, emotional agility invites us to name what we’re feeling, normalise it and move forward with flexibility. You don’t need to have all the answers, but being honest about how you’re feeling, and staying open to learning, is powerful leadership.

If you’re feeling the weight of uncertainty at the moment, know this - you’re not alone. But there are tools that can help. With the right mindset and support, we can all learn not just to cope, but to grow, connect and even thrive, whatever the world throws at us.
